Our recently retired conductor
Harry Malpass conducted the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra for over 20 years, (until 2000 as joint conductor with Chris Wiltshire), but decided to retire from the post in February 2008. Always popular with members and audiences alike, he has been a source of inspiration to the Orchestra. We owe him a great debt for his dedication and hard work, and he will be much missed.
Harry was born in Worcestershire and started piano lessons at the age of five. He continued his musical studies at the Royal College of Music in Manchester with Antoinette Wolf and George Hadjinikos. As a student he was greatly influenced by Sir John Barbirolli and George Weldon and has studied conducting with George Hurst.
He has worked as an accompanist and a conductor with many of this country's professional musicians, and currently examines for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and is also an examiner for GCSE and A-level Music.
